White Swan Fire Winter 2011

Wind gusts of over 50 mph push fire through the west end of town. Estimates have home loss at 20. If you are interested in helping the community, please consider a spring worktrip (or summer). We are not sure what work may be done, but whatever work is done will make a difference. Please get in touch with either David or Jill to make arrangements.

The Mission

SAGE is an ecumenical partnership between Methodists and Disciples of Christ in White Swan, Washington. SAGE Learning and Serving Trips engage youth, young adults, and elders in economic disaster relief while exploring the biblical witness regarding the poor, and learning how Christian, economic, business, and political practices maintain poverty. People have the opportunity to learn their capacity for living Missionally in the name of Christ.

Quick Overview

• Four full days of rural home repair, farm work, and working with homeless work.
• Accommodations at Historic Yakama Mission and Wilbur Memorial.
• Afternoon Time: visit the Yakama Nation Cultural Museum, historic Fort Simcoe, and personal reflection.
• Worship and devotions exploring rural/mission issues
• Thought provoking education concerning reservation history and poverty in relationship with Christianity.

They shall
build houses
and inhabit
them;
they shall
plant vineyards
and eat their
fruit.

Isaiah 65:21

Projects

SAGE participants work with partner organizations on the reservation to help the White Swan community and tend to communality agricultural needs. No previous experience is necessary.

Experience Personal Reflection

SAGE offers the unique opportunity to learn and reflect on the causes of reservation poverty and oppression. Participants find this work as challenging and rewarding, returning year after year to deepen their appreciation of God’s commitment to those who struggle.
